Spider Veins in Nashville, TN

Spider veins, or telangiectasias, are a small cluster of surface veins that take on a few basic patterns. They can radiate from a central point, similar to a sunburst, form a single linear line, take on the shape of a web-like maze or appear as tiny branches extending from a single trunk. These clusters of red, blue or purple lines can develop on any area of the body, but they most commonly appear on the thighs, calves, and buttocks. Spider veins can develop due to a number of factors, but they generally form when an unusual amount of pressure causes the vein to dilate. There are several compression-based and cosmetic treatments that claim to diminish the appearance of spider veins, but laser treatment is the gold standard. At New Life Physicians in Brentwood, regenerative medicine specialist Dr. Morgan Moor uses the Candela® GentleMax™ laser to treat spider veins.

What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins occur when poor circulation weakens vascular walls, causing blood vessels to break. Unlike varicose veins, spider veins do not bulge and are typically positioned just below the skin’s surface, but the red or purple discoloration of the broken blood vessels makes them highly visible. These rope-like veins often appear on the face or legs, and they can develop from sun damage and other sources of irritation. Spider veins are not related to any known medical concerns, but many sufferers often seek treatment because they’re considered unattractive by many and hard to conceal with makeup.

Laser therapy for spider veins? What type of laser is used to treat spider veins?

The removal of unwanted hair or spider veins on the face or legs is performed with our newest laser, the Candela® GentleMax™. This innovative laser technology combines two of the fastest and most powerful lasers (the Alexandrite laser and the Nd: YAG laser) into one. Multiple wavelengths that can be adjusted according to each individual patient and the extent and type of skin condition being addressed makes the Candela® GentleMax™ one of the most advanced laser systems available. The Candela® GentleMax™ Laser offers permanent relief from excess, unwanted hair without damaging the skin. This same laser is highly effective at reducing the appearance of unsightly veins without surgery or subsequent scarring, and it’s safe for all skin types.

Fulfilling its versatile treatment capabilities, the Candela® GentleMax™ laser can quickly and thoroughly address a variety of skin imperfections. This all-in-one laser was specifically designed to diminish the appearance of discoloration, unwanted hair and unsightly veins in the treatment area.

How does the Candela® GentleMax™ laser work?

Laser therapy is the most effective and convenient way to diminish the appearance of superficial veins.

The heat absorption from the laser’s wavelength of light causes pigment in the blood to shatter, and the vein responds by shrinking. The laser’s selective targeting can zero in on spider veins without damaging the surrounding skin tissue, and the vein will be reabsorbed by the body and completely disappear over the course of four to six weeks.

The recommended time interval between laser treatments for spider veins is four to six weeks. If new veins surface, additional treatments with the GentleMax™ laser will be required.

How do I know if I am a candidate for laser vein treatment?

You must undergo a thorough evaluation to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure. Spider veins are not linked to any known health concerns, and most patients seek treatment for cosmetic reasons only. If you’re experiencing other symptoms, a deeper evaluation will be performed to ensure that you are not suffering from varicose veins. Laser therapy is the ideal solution for treating small, superficial spider veins and large, deep varicose veins require a more invasive solution.

What preparations must I take?

Aside from a few common sense measures, there are no major preparations patients must make prior to laser treatment.

Patients should avoid the sun and aspirin, and refrain from smoking and alcohol consumption at least a week prior to their procedure.

On the day of treatment, patients should avoid topical lotions and moisturizers on the area to be treated and wear relaxed clothing that allows for easy access to the treatment area.

Is laser therapy painful? How does one feel after the laser therapy?

The skin over the treatment area may feel raised or swollen and appear red or bruised following treatment, but these side effects should subside within two to four hours. Arnica Montana 30C is recommended before and after laser treatments for bruising and discomfort.  It is a homeopathic treatment available online or at your local Vitamin Shoppe.  We recommend using both sublingual and topical forms before and after treatments.

Are there any precautions after laser therapy?

Avoiding the sun is crucial following laser therapy. You shouldn’t experience any downtime and should be able to resume your daily routine immediately after your procedure. Wearing support garments can accelerate healing and potentially enhance your results. Pain should be minimal, but if you do experience any pain, over-the-counter pain medications and ice packs may provide some relief. See above for Arnica.

How often can one undertake laser therapy for spider veins?

Individual treatment sessions should be scheduled at four to six-week intervals. If new spider veins appear, you must undergo additional treatments to resolve them.

When can I go back to work after laser therapy?

Patients can resume their normal daily routine immediately after treatment. Many patients find themselves exceptionally pleased with the immediate results, but the final results won’t become apparent for several months.

How long does it take for the results to become evident? How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments required to deliver optimal results will depend on the size of the treatment area and the extent of your spider veins. People who are predisposed to vascular problems will in all likelihood require additional treatments. Each individual treatment should be performed at least four to six weeks apart.

Are spider veins bad for health? What causes spider veins?

Abnormal blood flow and weakening of the blood vessels is the most common cause of spider veins. Dramatic weight gain and prolonged sitting or standing can contribute to the development of spider veins or make existing spider veins worse.

Spider veins are fairly common in elderly people because the skin becomes thinner and the blood vessels weaken with age. Some people are simply genetically predisposed to the formation of spider veins.

Pregnancy also makes women more susceptible to the development of spider veins due to an increase in estrogen, which has been linked to the weakening of the blood vessels. Spider veins are most likely to develop during the second trimester of pregnancy.

Do spider veins disappear on their own?

Once they surface, spider veins are not likely to disappear on their own. In fact, they tend to get worse over time, especially if you gain weight, fail to engage in an adequate amount of physical activity or exercise, or live a sedentary lifestyle.

What are advantages of laser over sclerotherapy?

Laser therapy for spider veins provides numerous benefits in comparison to traditional spider vein solutions such as sclerotherapy, including:

  • Fewer side effects
  • Little to no damage to the surrounding skin
  • Shorter treatment sessions
  • Less pain
  • Immediate recovery
  • Little to no downtime
  • The ability to treat facial spider veins without the risk of damage or discoloration to the facial skin

How can I prevent spider veins?

You can prevent the development of spider veins or prevent existing spider veins from progressing by:

  • Refraining from ill-fitting clothes and undergarments that are too tight on the waist, groin or legs
  • Keeping your legs uncrossed while seated
  • Avoiding prolonged sitting or standing positions
  • Engaging in regular exercise to promote circulation
  • Shedding excess pounds

Is laser treatment for spider veins curative?

Laser therapy can improve the appearance and completely remove existing spider veins, but it will not prevent or cure the formation of new spider veins. People who develop spider veins will always be at risk for developing new veins. Thus, subsequent laser treatments may be required in the future if you’re genetically predisposed or continue to engage in the activities that originally caused your spider veins.
